  • My coworker treated me like a kid until i quit and suddenly wanted to be friends

Tired female bartender leaning on a café counter behind the bar, surrounded by clean glasses, conveying workplace exhaustion and service industry stress.
  • This happened a few months ago but i still think about it sometimes, so i figured id share.
  • before i started traveling, i worked at a little coffee place back home. nothing fancy, just a local spot.
  • i was 17 when i started, and there was this one coworker who was like mid-20s.
  • from day one, she talked to me like i was a literal child. not in a mean way exactly, but very condescending.
  • lots of sweetie, explaining obvious things, double- checking my work even when id been doing it fine for weeks.
  • Two café coworkers talking behind the counter while holding coffee mugs, suggesting a workplace conversation or discussion during a shift.
  • at first i told myself it was whatever. i was younger, and i didnt want to make things awkward.
  • but it got old fast. shed correct me in front of customers or redo drinks i made without saying anything.
  • meanwhile, if older coworkers messed up, shed laugh it off. eventually i put in my notice because i knew i was leaving to travel.
  • nothing dramatic. on my second-to-last shift, her whole vibe changed. suddenly shes asking me about my plans, telling me how brave i am, saying she wishes shed done something like that at my age.
  • even added me on instagram and said we should totally hang out when im back. it was such a weird switch.
  • like once i wasnt the teenage coworker anymore, i was suddenly interesting and capable. i was polite, but inside i felt kind of annoyed.
  • i didnt change overnight. i was always the same person, she just didnt see it until i was leaving.
  • i dont really have a big lesson here. i guess it just stuck with me how some people only respect you when youre no longer beneath them in their own head.
  • definitely made me more aware of how i treat younger coworkers now.
  • BarelyInnocentEnough That coworker of yours was probably just insecure bout something within her. The moment she saw you doing something bold like travel, it shook her perception of you. Suddenly, you ain't the green newbie, you're someone stepping outside their comfort zone - something she ain't done. So just be you, keep on growin', don't let anyone's condescension get to ya. Life's too damn short for that kinda crap.
  • Desperate_Eye_2629 Sounds like she was mid-20s, talking like she'd seen it all. Get used to it, wherever life takes you. That is, if you ever have coworkers or colleagues - you're gonna collect so many more experiences like that one. Remember that just because someone is older; doesn't necessarily mean they're wiser.
  • Coder Joe1 She saw you in a different light, but it was too late for her to espresso.
  • Mega-Steve She decided she was your "work mom", and was sad that you were leaving "home"
